Books About Narcissists

With narcissism, there is a spectrum, and everyone falls somewhere. They take self-absorption to a high altitude, convinced that they are so rare that few are capable of understanding them. The disorder can manifest in the form of wild ambition, coupled with success, or swing the other direction, in which they may become melodramatic or believe they’re always the victim. “Narcissist” has become a buzzword we love to toss around—inspiring a frenzy of articles, blog posts, online quizzes, and memes. There is the image-obsessed friend who is in love with their own reflection, the arrogant boss who gloats over their own ideas, and the two-timing ex. But, do you really know a narcissist or have you been using it as a catchall phrase for someone has a moderate dose of these tendencies.
When my youngest was nine my mother faced her final illness and was in home hospice 1.5 hours away by car. She asked me to be there so my daughter and I spent a good deal of that summer with her. My husband narcissistic inventory asserted that my mother was faking illness to make his life difficult and moved another woman into our house as revenge. When we had our first kid I realized there was something way worse going on.

In the field of psychology, behavior can be described as overt or covert. Overt behaviors are those that can be easily observed by others, such as those of the traditional narcissist described earlier. Covert behaviors, however, are those that are more subtle and a bit less obvious to others. American social critics in the 1970s, convinced that their nation was in decline, turned to psychoanalysis for answers and seized on narcissism as the sickness of the age. Books indicting Americans as greedy, shallow, and self-indulgent appeared, none more influential than Christopher Lasch’s famous 1978 jeremiad The Culture of Narcissism. This line of critique reached a crescendo the following year in Jimmy Carter’s “malaise speech” and has endured to this day.
When triggered, the narcissist’s continuity of perception collapses into present-moment reactive emotion. If his/her child forgets to do a chore, for example, the narcissist father may become enraged and punish him/her, seeing the behavior as spiteful or irresponsible even if the child is usually conscientious. The Narcissistic Personality Inventory is the most widely used measure of narcissism in social psychological research. Although several versions of the NPI have been proposed in the literature, a forty-item forced-choice version (Raskin & Terry, 1988) is the one most commonly employed in current research.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a personality disorder that involves a long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive need for admiration, and a lack of understanding of others’ feelings. Sadism is an additional factor observed in the most severe type of NPD, malignant narcissism. At the psychological level NPD is usually diagnosed or studied using some type of self-report diagnostic instrument. While there is not a large body of research on the neuroscience of NPD, there are consistencies pointing to abnormalities in certain brain areas, especially the insular cortex, that are associated with features of NPD, especially lack of empathy. The origins of NPD remain unknown, however biological, psychological and social factors all play important roles in the etiology of this disorder. Further clinical and neuroscience studies of empathy disorders, especially NPD and malignant narcissism, are necessary in order to better understand the environmental factors that contribute to this disorder.
A main point in the webinar however was that individual therapy has a low success rate for bringing about changes in narcissistic behavior patterns. While one-on-one sessions with a therapist can help narcissistic individuals feel less depressed, anxious or angry, to break out of the self-defeating and relationship-destroying habits of narcissism itself, couples therapy can be a far more potent treatment modality. Learn the differences between other personality disorders and narcissism, and how one can be grown out of while narcissism is usually permanent. Psychologists often wonder about clients who present in treatment with the same types of emotional traumas as people who grew up in alcoholic homes, but whose parents were not alcoholics. This groundbreaking book shows how being raised by a narcissist is emotionally equivalent to being raised by an alcoholic in many ways. If you feel that you could never go against the party line in your home, and there was only one way that you were allowed to view things, then you could benefit from reading this excellent text.

Start loving and caring for yourself in ways that you wished your mom or dad had loved and cared for you. Start paying attention to what really matters to you; what makes you feel alive and moments when you feel authentically you. Maybe that means getting re-parented by a therapist, or maybe the healing comes from an emotionally reparative romantic partnership. Maybe you have a friend’s mother who is nurturing to you, or a mentor who celebrates the real you.
Nevertheless, regardless of whether a formal DSM diagnosis of NPD is made, psychiatrists should be alert to the presence of narcissistic pathology in their patients, as it may significantly influence their management and treatment within mental health services. Schema-focused therapy is an integrative psychotherapy that expands strategies from traditional cognitive–behavioural therapy, but also systematically incorporates elements from object relations, psychodynamic and gestalt therapeutic models. To date, no clinical trials of schema-focused therapy have been conducted for NPD, but clinical reports suggest that it may be effective for the disorder.
Taking these necessary precautions will save you time, stress, and money because you won’t have to involve your lawyer to obtain these documents. I am not here to lecture you, I am here to simply state the facts in black and white. My hope from the bottom of my heart is that you make decisions that are in your best interest to live your best life. A life that is free from any narcissist and where the possibilities are limitless. As your relationship nears its end, your narcissistic partner’s behavior will likely escalate from bad to worse. If your narcissistic partner senses that you are going to leave, or when you do, they will frequently accuse you of gross dishonesty.

This is what happens when a parents’ narcissism engulfs their children. You believe in yourself and what you can do, and your self-evaluation is realistic. You can empathize with other people, and understand their feelings and perspectives. You aren’t devastated by criticism, mistakes, or failure. Your sense of self can withstand life’s ups and downs and people’s opinions.
